Lithuania, a Baltic nation in Europe, is bordered by Latvia, Belarus, Poland, and Russia's Kaliningrad enclave. Its capital, Vilnius, is known for its baroque architecture and medieval old town. The country has a population of about 2.8 million. Lithuania was the first Soviet republic to declare independence in 1990. It is a member of the EU and NATO. Known for its landscapes, it has numerous lakes and forests, including the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
